Art Critque â⬠Mona Lisa Overdose Essay
Using the different elements of art, the artist organized the elements to provoke a feeling of puzzlement and surprise to the audience. The Mona Lisa, being a famous painting, was distorted in a way that it projects a different emotion from the original one. Lorenzana presented the distortion of the proportion and scale of the face of the Mona Lisa in order to evoke a feeling of unsettling disbelief with the visuals of the painting. The change of the Mona Lisaââ¬â¢s face caused a contrast to be present in the artwork. It emphasized the subjectââ¬â¢s face and the cigarette presented irony from the original knowledge about the base artwork. Combining all these elements, the artist was able to express the idea of the paining, which is how something clean and subtle, can turn into something mischievous or bizarre. The elements provided the audience a sense of bizarre facial elements on the subject, which caused a subtle, dark, and mysterious tone to be emanated from the painting. Interpretation By Paolo Alilam In this artwork Luis Lorenzana painted a very different Mona Lisa. He depicted a very ââ¬Å"overdosedâ⬠Mona Lisa with a stick of cigarette, a bottle of Red Horse, and face with clown-like make up. I think he was just trying to add a little bit of today in something very classic. The normal Mona Lisa shows a very pleasant portrait. Luis Lorenzanaââ¬â¢s artworks usually show surrealism or bizarreness. This fact explains this rendition of the Mona Lisa. I think he created this just to show creativity and give people a different taste compared to the usual. Who would imagine Mona Lisa like this anyway? When I look at the artwork I feel a bit weirded-out. For me itââ¬â¢s not such a pleasant artwork. Itââ¬â¢s somewhat scary even. But, like I said, he made this artwork just to give people a different taste. ââ¬Å"Do I think there are symbols to the artwork?â⬠Maybe. Maybe Luis Lorenzana likes cigarettes, drinks, and other things like that. Well, I donââ¬â¢t really k now the guy. Another possibility is that when he was painting this he was smoking or drinking. Weââ¬â¢ll never know unless we ask him. Judgment By JV Valdez The artwork is a very surrealistic painting. It presents the famous Mona Lisa in some sort of parody in which seems like sheââ¬â¢s high on drugs and drunk from drinking ââ¬Å"Red Horse beerâ⬠. In my opinion the artist presented a really good distortion of the Mona Lisa. In the original painting of the Mona Lisa she was presented as a demure woman, however the artist distorted that and turned her into a non-conservative drunkard. Based on my personal preferences, I would consider this as a good artwork because I have a preference for artworks that look demented and creepy. However, I donââ¬â¢t think it is an important artwork because I have seen a lot of different artworks trying to do the same distortion with the Mona Lisa as well. I also donââ¬â¢t find the artwork unique in anyway because like I said I have seen other distortions of the Mona Lisa and I view this certain artwork as just one of the many different imitations. All in all I really like this artwork because it has that eerie and demented emotion that it is trying to evoke from viewers, which gives me the creeps every time I look at it.

How effectively does Pavel Ivanov use language to persuade his/her audience?
The film review about the movie ââ¬ËI now pronounce you Chuck ; Larry' written by Pavel Ivanov is well suited to its audience who the writer describes as the ââ¬ËAdam Sandler crowd', although Ivanov does indicate that audiences who get pleasure from comical films, would probably enjoy the blatant crude humour in this movie for example the ââ¬Ëdropped soap in the shower routine' Ivanov's implied meaning is that those who'd laugh at this type of humour have no taste and lack intelligence, as this ââ¬Ëtype of humour' has intentionally been put into the movie as it is the ââ¬Ëmost lucid strategy' to win over audiences One of the purposes of the review is to denigrate the movie as an unintelligent film for those who are dim-witted, as it is full of ââ¬Ëprimitive weaponry of toilet humour' and ââ¬Ëgay-clichi?? jokes', but at the same time Ivanov maintains a neutral stance by complimenting the movie on some of its achievements ââ¬Ësubverts the gambit of any other ââ¬Ëserious' gay movie'. The lexis used in the review is overall formal, with some elements of colloquialism such as ââ¬Ëthe icing on the cake'. You can read also com/audience-adaptation-paper/">Audience Adaptation Paper He uses such conversational style lexis to amuse and engage his audience. Ivanov establishes himself with the first person singular pronoun ââ¬ËI' to identify with readers as someone who has seen the movie thus immediately capturing the readers' interest and trust. He directly addresses his readers by using the second person singular pronoun ââ¬Ëyou' Ivanov uses this device to draw in his readers in to the review as well as deliver a personal message to them about the film. The writer applies a subordinate clause to give additional information about the movie to the audience. By combining the sentence with a relative clause, Ivanov's text becomes more fluent to readers. ââ¬ËInteresting thing this movie does is that while staying within the constraints of a broad comedy, it subverts the typical gambit of any other serious gay film' this is also a compound sentence as it adds detail of the movie and gives it a justification it also gives it a rationale, and makes a simple sentence more compelling and informative. He describes his disbelief in the plot of the movie by using a comparative sentence ââ¬Ëinstead of seeing a homosexual feigning happiness in a straight marriage' he then adds supplementary information about the movie he's writing about (ââ¬Ëthink, the hours or normal') here Ivanov displays his skepticism as to why someone would want to watch a movie with such a bizarre plot ââ¬Ëstraight men come from a bastion of heroic manliness- the New York fire fighting service' this is ironic as you expect straight men to be fire fighters. Ivanov uses double modifiers to describe a famous actor in the movie as ââ¬Ëbizarrely bankable' by using the lexis ââ¬Ëbizarrely' Ivanov expresses to his audiences his disbelief in why this actor is so ââ¬Ëbankable' although Ivanov could also be amazed about the actors performance that not only can he do funny and serious but that he can do the two simultaneously in the movie as he addresses a serious message to the audience that ââ¬Ëbias is bad' and still keep it comic. In the opening paragraph Ivanov uses the adjective ââ¬Ëenergetic' and follows it up with the post-modifier ââ¬Ëcrassness' Ivanov's constant emphasis on the vulgarity of the movie, leads the readers to consider whether they would watch such an offensive film at all, thus reinforcing Ivanov's earlier point that the movie is not worth watching as it is aimed at unintelligent audiences, and that the only basis one should watch the movie ought to be for ââ¬Ëacademic interest'. Ivanov describes a ridiculous scene in the movie ââ¬Ëa three legged hippo doing ballet' his implication being that such strange humour is not only typical but it is what has made him a household name in comedies ââ¬Ëstill an Adam Sandler movie' The text contains lots of exophoric references (ââ¬ËBig daddy, happy Gilmore') which have been put in parenthesis to add supplementary information. ââ¬Å"Larry (Kevin James)â⬠parenthesis is commonly used in the text by Ivanov to signify to audiences the formality of the review. The writer uses many anaphoric references one example is ââ¬Ëthe set up is contrived as they come, but this is part of the joke'. What both lexis ââ¬Ëthe set up and ââ¬Ëthis' share is that ââ¬â they have the same reference. On the whole Ivanov is successful in keeping track of the various people and things he mentions in his review by building a reference chain this makes Ivanov's writing more coherent to audiences. The example given above is also a dependant clause as it cannot stand by it self it needs it an independent clause to make the sentence complete. Ivanov constantly reminds audiences of the crudity of the movie, but he changes his strategy this time by picking out bits of the film that he feels his readers would be alarmed by ââ¬Ëfeel Alex's breasts. ââ¬Ë This displays Ivanov's desperation as he is trying everything to persuade the readers not to watch the movie. The key purpose that Pavel Ivanov has written the review is to persuade audiences not to watch the movie, his underlining reason being that it would ââ¬Ëoffend you' rather than ââ¬Ëamuse you'. I suppose he is successful in convincing readers not to watch the movie, one effective regular feature I can identify Ivanov uses in his review is the first person singular pronoun ââ¬ËI' he uses this to his advantage as he introduces himself to his readers as a reliable impartial critic, which is clearly not the case as he regularly belittles the movie and the individuals it is aimed at. This might make some readers feel uneasy as they do not count themselves part of the ââ¬ËAdam Sandler crowd' consequently readers contemplate on whether it is worth watching this movie at all this. Ivanov's unrelenting pressurising of readers makes him successful in achieving his target.

Maintaining Competitive Advantage Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
Maintaining Competitive Advantage - Essay Example The firm applies three types of competitive advantage in its operations i.e. cost leadership, differentiation (of product, image, service, sales, distribution and marketing) and lastly focus in cost and differentiation. (Palmer and Hardy, 2000) Amazon examines activities performed in their organization and relates how each activity is connected to the other. These activities are the main sources of the advantage, they includes marketing, operation among others. By performing these strategic activities (a method commonly known as value chain) in a better and a cheaper way than its competitors the firm gains the competitive advantage. Value chain helps Amazon to understand the existing probable sources of differentiation and the general behaviour of the existing costs. Activities affecting Amazon's buyer activities are the key determinants of differentiation results. Cumulative costs in the value chain are used in determining the overall difference between the producer cost and the buyer value of Amazon. The value chain clearly indicates that competitive advantage can emanate anywhere along the chain value. According to porter (1998) competitive advantage entails managing firm's value chain as a system rather than a collection of separate parts. Amazon makes application to this by making a choice of performing activities in a way that is different from the rivals.

New strategic plan summary for CBP Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 5500 words
New strategic plan summary for CBP - Essay Example However, the current enforcement policy presumes that all goods and all travellers are guilty until such time as they prove otherwise. Thus clearance at US borders is based on interrogations and inspections that are quite often unnecessary. In this regard, resources are being wasted on legitimate goods and legitimate travellers when those resources would be better spent inspecting and interrogating unlawful goods, unauthorized travellers and security threats whether in the form of persons or goods. It is also believed that CBPââ¬â¢s community engagement initiatives are far too institutional and does not devote enough resources and time to forging relationships with the community. There is a need for CBP to actively engage members of the community as a means of ensuring that they build a sense of confidence in the CBPââ¬â¢s mission and goals and support it. There is a need to change the current practice of communicating what CBP is doing and what CBP has done or will do in terms of keeping US borders safe. While there is a need to continue to reassure the public via transparency via communication, there is also a need to open up the lines of communication so that CBP gets information from the community. The community provides a rich source of information relative to where illegal immigrants, international criminals and terrorists and contraband originate from and where they go once they enter the US. The strategic plan in this report therefore proposes to reconceptualise customs and border patrol with a view to changing the enforcement-focused approach to border security. While enforcement is always necessary it is not the only method for keeping US borders safe. When time and resources are managed more appropriately US borders will be safer. Thus the strategic plan suggests training officers to identify more accurately travellers and goods that are candidates for quick clearance so that CBP officers can direct their attention to the more serious security risks. Therefore the strategic plan calls for a dual strategy: accommodating legitimate travellers and lawful goods; enforcement and deterrence of unlawful travellers, criminals and terrorists. The strategic plan also calls for training agents and officers to be more capable of recognizing and responding to security threats in instances where travellers or goods are legitimate and should be cleared for entry. There are cases where a traveller has the requisite travel documents but is entering the US for criminal or terrorist reasons. Rather than inspecting all visitors and going on what amounts to a fishing expedition, officers should be specifically trained to know when it is appropriate to interrogate a traveller or conduct a more invasive search of goods. The strategic plan also calls for assigning agents to community relations and this involves maintaining a tip line for receiving anonymous tips from members of the public. It is important that members of the community feel invol ved in the security process as they will be more inclined to cooperate and to share important information with the CBP. Members of the public can help CBP direct its resources properly by providing information about where contraband originates and where criminals and illegals go when they enter the US or how they get to the US when they are not cleared at the
Pro Forma Income Statement and Balance Sheet Essay
Pro Forma Income Statement and Balance Sheet - Essay Example This is done by dividing the balance for these accounts by sales revenue for 2013. The Balance Sheet accounts, which generally vary closely with Sales are cash, inventory, accounts payable, and accounts receivable. Fixed Assets are also often tied closely to Sales, unless there is excess capacity. On the Income Statement, costs are expressed as a percentage of Sales. Since we are assuming that all costs remain at a fixed percentage of Sales, net Income can be expressed as a percentage of sales indicating the profit margin. Taxes are expressed as a percentage of taxable income to determine the tax rate. The next step is constructing the Partial Pro-forma Financial Statements. The first step involves determining the forecast sales level for the company. One plus the forecasted growth rate in Sales multiplied by the sales for the year 2013 yields the sales forecast for 2014. The following formula explains this step. To obtain the growth rate, we compare the sales level of 2013 to the sales level of 2011 and 2012. There was a 1.6% drop in sales from 2011 to 2012. In 2013, the drop in sales was 3.1%. the average drop in sales for the two year period was 2.35%. therefore, the forecasted sales level for 2014 will be; After determining the sales forecast, the income statement and balance sheet accounts that vary directly with Sales are determined by multiplying the percentages by the Sales forecast. The accounts that do not vary directly with Sales are transferred to the Partial Pro-Forma Financial Statements without adjustments. The last step of constructing the pro forma financial statements is determining the external finance needed. External finance needed is the difference between partial pro-forma total assets and partial pro-forma total liabilities and owners equity. The amount for Garmin Ltd is 4887221-4879603 = 7618. Firms can choose to raise the external finance needed by

The article is Origin of the human malaria parasite Plasmodium Research Paper
The article is Origin of the human malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum in gorillas by Weimin Liu1 - Research Paper Example The study also revealed that the infections contained mixed species. Over 1100 nuclear, mitochondrial, and apicoplast genes were analyzed. Additionally, 99 percent of the genes were classified in any of the six Plasmodium species. Plasmodium falciparum does not originate from human, chimpanzee, or bonobo. It mainly originates from gorilla. The study is based on Plasmodium species as the cause of malaria. Among the species, the most prevalent is Plasmodium falciparum. The background of the study was that P. reichenowi that has close relations with P. falciparum was found in chimpanzee. Furthermore, there have been more plasmodium relations that have been found in Western gorillas and bonobos. Contrastingly, previous studies were used to develop the hypothesis that cross-species transmission among apes could have given rise to P. falciparum in human beings. The study revealed that the main reservoirs for Plasmodium are Western gorillas and chimpanzees. It also found that distribution of malarial parasites among apes depends on seasonal, regional, and ecological differences. Consequently, that gave details of the existence of the Plasmodium species in different locations. A study was designed to find colonization of human beings by gorilla parasites. It involved the construction of phylogenetic trees which compared genome equivalents. Accordingly, it was found that the human P. falciparum consequences had their routes to an ancestor in the gorilla parasite. The findings assert the evidence that human P. falciparum have its origin in gorillas (Weimin, 11). Alternatively, the study portrays a monopoly in the sequences of human parasites and establishes the different human strains that originated from one cross-species in terms of transmission from gorilla-to-human. However, infections in bonobos were from human parasites when the apes resided in urban sanctuaries. The study discovers that over nine plasmodium species naturally infect

Memorandum. The intentional infliction of emotional distress case Assignment
Memorandum. The intentional infliction of emotional distress case study - Assignment Example The relevant law to be used in this case is the intentional infliction of emotional distress. In this case, it will be determined whether Mr. Crane should be charged for intentional infliction of emotional distress on Ms. Jeffers. The case has not been filed but it is probable that Ms. Jeffers will sue Mr. Crane for intentional infliction of emotional distress, particularly, his conduct was extreme and outrageous. The law states for the conduct to be extreme and outrageous, the distress must be able to affect the functionality of the plaintiffââ¬â¢s professional or personal life. Several cases have used the law and different interpretations have been given on the outcome of the cases. Mr. Craneââ¬â¢s conduct is probably not extreme and outrageous. This is because the law states that for a conduct to be regarded as extreme and outrageous, the distress is supposed to have a significant impact on the plaintiffââ¬â¢s professional and personal life. Mr. Crane acted out of goodwill and Ms. Jeffers interfered with the conversation between him and Christy. According to the cases discussed, it is evident that prove must be given to indicate that the defendantââ¬â¢s conduct was extreme and outrageous. The law states that for the defendantââ¬â¢s conduct to be regarded extreme and outrageous, it must be outrageous in character and extreme such that it is beyond the degree of decency. The extreme and outrageous behavior may arise from abuse of the individual or from the significant authority given to defendant (or the power he or she possesses) over the other such that he can influence his or her interests. ... Application Mr. Craneââ¬â¢s remarks are not enough to prove that he caused emotional distress on Ms. Jeffers. Based on the second case, it can be argued that Mr. Crane was doing his duty as a ââ¬Å"gymnastics coachâ⬠and he knew the strengths and weaknesses of each student. Thus, in his opinion based on the performance of the student, he could give a conclusive statement about the student. Just like Mattix-Hill, conflicts of duties and interests emerged. Though Mr. Crane talked in a harsh tone, this cannot be enough to consider his conduct as extreme and outrageous. In the first case, it is clearly stated that indignities, annoyances, mere insults, petty oppressions, or even threats do not amount to be considered as extreme and outrageous conduct. Ms. Jeffers has not yet claimed that she has suffered emotional distress from the remarks made by Mr. Crane. However, if she claims, it will be important that she prove that the coach caused emotional distress as seen in all the four cases. Th e fact that Mr. Crane talked in an inhumane manner, his conduct can still be regarded as extreme and outrageous if Ms. Jeffers gives sufficient evidence. Thus, Ms. Jeffers can win the claim for intentional infliction of emotional distress. However, Mr. Craneââ¬â¢s conduct is probably not extreme and outrageous.

Power of Religion Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
Power of Religion - Essay Example There are various elements in the world which are beyond the power human intellect and it is this incapacity which has made him to seek the refuge in religion from time immemorial. Thus, one finds that world religions offer its followers the scope for finding meaning to basic elements that are beyond human intellect. This important role of religions, as commented by Ezra Niesen, includes providing ââ¬Å"an explanation for what makes the universe work, some way for people to escape their physical mortality, ways for people to build healthy families and strong communities, and ways for people to make themselves feel satisfied with their lives.â⬠(Niesen). There is obvious role of religions to provide the humans with the capacity to understand the factors which completely beyond the power of their intellect. Modernisation and under-development Essay Example for Free
Modernisation and under-development Essay The concept of globalisation is one that has become widely used in debates in politics, business and the media over the past few years. A decade ago the term globalisation was relatively unknown. Today it seems to be on the tip of everyones tongue. Globalisation refers to the fact we all increasingly live in one world, so that individuals, groups and nations become interdependent. According to Held, Goldblatt and Perraton globalisation is an idea whose time has come yet it (globalisation) lacks precise definition. Despite the imprecision of the term globalisation the use of the term, according to Held and McGrew, reflects increased interconnectedness in political, economic and cultural matters across the world creating a shared social space. Hyperglobalists argue that contemporary globalisation defines a new era in which peoples everywhere are increasingly subject to the disciplines of the global marketplace. Although economic forces are an integral part of globalisation, it would be wrong to suggest that they alone produce it. Globalisation is created by the coming together of politics, social, cultural and economic factors. It has been driven forward above all by the development of the information and communication technologies that have intensified the speed and scope of interaction between people al over the world. As a simple example, think of the last 2008 Olympics. Because of global television links some of the sports are now watched by millions worldwide. Marx believed direct expressions of underlying economic organisation, quite different types of political order may exist in societies that have similar production systems. For instance, some societies based on industrial capitalism have had authoritarian political systems (examples are Nazi German and South Africa under apartheid) whole others are much more democratic for example, the United States, Britain or Sweden. The impact of science and technology both influence and are influenced by political and cultural factors scientific and technology development for example helped create modern forms of communication such as radio and television. Radio, television and other electronic media have also come to shape the how we think and feel about the world. The invention of writing for instance, allowed for the keeping of records, making possible increased control of material resources and development of large scale organisations. The free market does nothing to address re-distribution of wealth. It assumes that wealth will trickle down to the poor. The former British Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher, once said it is our job to glory in inequality and see that talents and abilities are given vent and expression for the benefit of all of us.

In the big organizations there are many people to create strategies so one has to develop himself from a very start to have own strategies to work with the other employees, he should have control power on his resolution making skill and applications of certain plans. This not only involves benefits of individuals receiving success fast but also a heavy risk of getting responsible. This leadership quality for achievements of ambitions is itself a top strategy because it also involves man agement of human resources. 2.2:Construct a personal development plan to direct leadership development The other issue that went in the support was that while it was simple to indict a McKinsey for a project plan, that was very, comfortable to keep their services right throughout conclusion. With TSMG, on the further hand, each project shaped a kind of symbiosis that the client has a company that would happily be a partner in accomplishment, while TSMG gained learnings that were much richer than their western counterpart could get jointly. To give its service a clear benefit, Tata strategic management has decisive on construction expert teams. Pankaj Gupta, exercise head for customer and retail, elaborate, In many cases, company add technological expert to our plan teams ââ¬â people who have actually been in higher status of companies for next few years in automotive, customer products. This is a very tough differentiator that sets Tata strategic management groups services except for from and on pinnacle of those of its competitor in the market. 2.3 Devise an implementation process for the development plan The first project that Tata strategic management group took up within the group was a policy study for the Tata Oil Mills which was linked in its sale to Hindustan Lever. after that came the study for restructuring Voltas, the policy study for Lakmà © which lead to the sale of the comprise business to Unilever, the gaining of Little Woods ââ¬â a English-owned retail series in south India ââ¬â and Trents hooked on attire retail throughout Westside and Food Grocery retail all the way through Star Bazaar. Tata strategic management group work on the attainment of VSNL, its broadband entrance plan and business data services expansion strategy; it up to the business drawing for the groups right of entry into shopper electronics business, provided JV cooperation and performance support for the arrangement of Infiniti Retail.
